What to Know Before You Go

How to prepare for cycling the Via Francigena

The Via Francigena is much more than a bike route — it’s a journey through history, nature and culture, leading you from Lucca to Rome along one of the most fascinating cycling itineraries in Italy.
Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for the ride.

What kind of preparation do you need?

You don’t have to be a pro athlete, but having a basic cycling fitness makes the ride more enjoyable. If you usually ride 30–40 km a couple of times a week, you're good to go.
The stages are designed for travelers who enjoy cycle touring. Some climbs exist, but nothing extreme.
And if you want to enjoy the journey with less effort, you can choose an e-bike, ideal for longer days and mixed terrain.

What to wear on a bike trip?

Good cycling clothing is all about comfort and adaptability. Choose technical, breathable gear and prepare for changing conditions. Essentials include:
  • Technical cycling jerseys (short and long sleeve)
  • Padded cycling shorts
  • Windbreaker and light rain jacket
  • Gloves, sunglasses and helmet
  • Comfortable shoes (also for walking short sections)
  • A thermal layer (especially in spring or autumn)
Layering is key to staying comfortable from morning to afternoon.

Nutrition during your bike trip

Cycling every day requires energy — so eat light, eat often.
Start with a solid breakfast (carbs and fruit), and bring:
  • Water (at least 1.5L) and electrolytes in hot weather
  • Dried fruit or energy bars
  • Salty snacks (nuts, crackers)
  • Fresh fruit if available
Lunch should be simple and easy to digest. Dinner? A great time to enjoy local specialties like pici pasta, pecorino cheese, or Tuscan wine.

What to pack (bikepacking or luggage transport)

Whether you choose bikepacking or our luggage transfer service, pack smart. Essentials include:
  • 2–3 cycling kits
  • Comfortable evening clothes
  • Flat repair kit and mini pump
  • Lock, phone charger, power bank
  • ID, credit card, health insurance
  • Sunscreen, lip balm, travel hygiene kit
  • Lightweight evening shoes
Travel light, but don’t forget the essentials.

When to start riding? Seasonal tips

Planning a bike trip on the Via Francigena from Lucca to Rome means adjusting to the season. Here's how to make the most of each time of year:
  • Spring & Autumn: Ideal cycling weather. Start around 8:00–9:00 a.m. for a full, relaxed day on the road.
  • Summer: Set off early (even at 7:00 a.m.) to avoid the midday heat. Bring extra water and sun protection.
  • Winter: Yes — you can ride the Francigena in winter! The climate from Lucca to Rome is often mild. Just be ready for shorter days, cooler air, and possibly muddy trails. With a gravel bike with rain tires or an e-MTB, this route becomes an adventurous, off-season experience.
If you like peaceful roads and fewer tourists, winter can be magical.
