From Siena to San Gimignano

54 km of pure wonder.
If the sun shines on your first day in the saddle, you are truly lucky: the ridges of Val d’Arbia, unfolding as soon as you leave Siena, are a hymn to the beauty of Tuscany. The city slowly fades into the distance, nestled like a jewel among the hills, as you cycle along quiet secondary roads that lead you to Monteroni d’Arbia. Here, you can admire the monumental Grancia di Cuna, a fortified farmhouse from the 13th century: a unique testament to the deep bond between the land, history, and human ingenuity.
You will then cross the Ombrone Valley, following the Via Francigena through golden fields and scattered farmhouses, until reaching Buonconvento. Step through its medieval walls and discover why its name means "happy place": the village will welcome you with stone alleys and an atmosphere suspended in time, perfect for a refreshing break. From here, the route becomes even more poetic: every pedal stroke is rewarded by the breathtaking views of the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its rolling hills and cypress alleys drawing perfect curves. Arriving in San Quirico d’Orcia is the ultimate reward: admire the artistic details on the Collegiate Church's facade and treat yourself to a moment of quiet among the geometric hedges of the Horti Leonini, a Renaissance garden where peace reigns supreme.

54 km through villages, thermal waters, and ancient spirituality. The journey continues through the heart of the Val d'Orcia, amidst rolling hills and landscapes that look like paintings. After a few kilometers, you will come across Vignoni Alto, a small medieval jewel overlooking the valley. At its feet lies Bagno Vignoni, famous for its extraordinary water-filled square: treat yourself to a rejuvenating break among the thermal vapors to recharge body and mind before setting off again.
The road then winds through quiet rural scenery leading you toward the border with Lazio. Entering Acquapendente marks a symbolic moment in the journey, where the atmosphere becomes steeped in history and mysticism. Do not miss the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre: descend into its Romanesque crypt, a place of extraordinary spiritual intensity that, according to tradition, houses sacred stones stained with the blood of Christ. Amidst carved capitals and ancient silence, you will experience one of the most profound moments of the entire route.

The stop in Montefiascone is a magical moment: here, you will walk on original Roman paving stones, witnesses to centuries of pilgrimages. Climb the Pilgrims' Tower (Torre dei Pellegrini): the view overlooking the lake and the Tuscia region is one of the most beautiful gifts of this journey.
Before heading down toward the shore, treat yourself to a glass of Est! Est!! Est!!!, the wine that made this village world-famous. If you're looking for a moment of pure well-being, the natural pools of Bagnaccio will welcome you for a refreshing outdoor soak.
